Iffat Zehra completed a Masters degree in International Relations from Quid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, and worked as a lecturer in Sind University, Pakistan. After immigrating to Canada in 1995, Iffat completed a Certificate of Corporate Communications from Seneca College, Toronto. She then worked at the Riverdale Immigrant Women Centre in Toronto from 1999 to 2004.

The lessons learned at Riverdale shaped Iffat’s views about the directions that immigrants should take to successfully integrate into the socio-cultural fabric of Canada. In response to these realizations, in 2004, Iffatt co-founded the organization Community Economic Development (CED) for Immigrant Women in Durham Region.
